In Malawi, the scarcity of this most basic resource has an enormous impact on women and young girls. Retrieving water can be quite dangerous - especially for the youngest who make the daily journey. The route, often along a busy roadway or remote stretch of wilderness, may expose children to potential harm, and time spent on these difficult duties overlap with school hours, contributing to the high drop out rates and low literacy among Malawi’s mothers and daughters. These realities led to the formation of Formidable Joy - a nonprofit based in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to providing safe access points to clean water in Malawi. Their projects include water systems in rural schools, pubic hospitals, and remote refugee camps across the country.
